Day 1: Flight to South Africa

Your trip starts with a long-haul flight to Cape Town, South Africa.

 

Day 2: Welcome to South Africa

At the Cape Town airport you will be greeted by a local driver. From here you will be transferred to your cosy guest house in down-town Cape Town. Just before sunset you drive up Signal Hill, where you will enjoy a spectacular sundowner to celebrate your welcome to South Africa. D

 

Day 3: Cape of Good Hope And the African Penguins

Today you explore the entire Cape Peninsula with all its fascinating highlights. A drive over probably the most spectacular mountain pass of the Western Cape, the Chapman’s Peak Drive (might be closed) will take you through the rural coastal village of Noordhoek to the outmost South-western point of Africa, the Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point. Driving along False Bay you’ll reach the old South African marine base Simon’s Town in the afternoon where you will visit a rookery of African penguins nesting on Boulders Beach. Shortly before returning to Cape Town, you will then visit the breathtaking Botanical Garden of Kirstenbosch, displaying the variety of local vegetation on more than 500 ha and part of the UNESCO World Heritage.116 km / B, D

 

Day 4: The whole universe in the Great Karoo

Early in the morning after breakfast you will leave in a North-Eastern direction towards the semi-arid Karoo. “Karoo” is an old bushman word for “land of big thirst”. The road will take you over spectacular mountain passes to a “Big 5” game drive in a private game reserve. You will then continue to Sutherland, South Africa’s “stargazing capital”. Stargazing with an amateur astronomer at night – including a look through his telescope – will provide more exciting insights about the incredible dimensions of the universe! Tonight you will be staying at a lovely guest house where the stargazing takes place.

Day 6: The Great Mountain Passes of the Karoo

In the morning, you will visit SALT (Southern African Large Telescope), the largest optical telescope in the southern hemisphere. A fascinating tour will introduce you to the exploration of the stars on this side of the world. The road will then take you further through the Great Karoo along karoo-typical gravel roads, past old towns. This will give you an impression of the quiet life in this semiarid region. A stunning variety of succulents, bushes, scrubs and other plants (more than 9 000 identified so far) and antelopes roam free as you make your way. All together you will be crossing four exceptionally beautiful mountain passes today, the Komsberg Pass, the Rooinek Pass, the stunning 17 kilometer long Seweweekspoort Pass that crosses all the way through the Swartberge and ultimately the Huisrivierpass. The last pass is on the famous Route 62 winding its way through the Little Karoo towards the  “Ostrich Capital of South Africa”, Oudtshoorn. Here, on a beautiful farm at the foot of the majestic Swartberg mountain range you will be staying for the next two nights.

Tag 6: Die Federbarone und der fantastische Swartberg Pass

In the town that was home to the “Feather Barons”, you’ll visit one of the typical local ostrich farms and learn more about the animals, their history and economic importance for the region. You will then continue to one of the Seven Wonders of South Africa, the world famous Cango Caves. After lunch you will embark on yet another awesome trip over the Swartberg Mountains (black mountain in Afrikaaans), this time over the spectacular Swartberg Pass. The Swartberg is amongst the best exposed fold mountain chains in the world, and the pass slices through magnificently scenic geological formations. To the North of the range lies the large semi-arid area in South Africa, the Great Karoo, where you will visit the quaint little town of Prince Albert. Much of the Swartberg is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Pass was built using convict labour by South Africans famous mountain pass engineer Thomas Bain and was opened on 10 January 1888. The drystone work supporting some of its bends is is very interesting to see. The dry-stone retaining walls are still in place and are over 120 years old. The pass is not tarred and can be a little treacherous after rain, but offers spectacular views over the Little Karoo to the South and the Great Karoo to the North. The plant life along the pass is very interesting, many hundreds of species can be found on the Swartberg pass. In the afternoon you will start making your way back to the guest farm in Oudtshoorn. Tonight you can experience a true South African “braai” (barbecue) for dinner.

Day 7:The Knysna Lagoon on the famous Garden Route
Today you will have a complete change of scenery, as you leave the inland plateau of the Karoo to descend  down the exceptionally beautiful Montagu Pass (over 2 600 ft) heading towards the Indian Ocean. As you are following the coast among the famous Garden Route, you will travel through the small village of Sedgefield and Wilderness, before you arrive at the awesome lagoon-town of Knysna. Here you will spend the next two nights in a relaxing Guest House close to the famous Knysna Waterfront. Today you are going to do a local township tour. You will get to experience the township life through visits to schools, artists, locals and shop owners. You get to see and understand how the townships started and how they evolved into a community of passion and 'Ubuntu' (spirit of giving). For dinner you will have a delicious meal at a restaurant in the Waterfront.

Day 8: Portuguese Seafarers and the “Bahia Famosa”

On a trip to the coastal town of Plettenberg Bay in the morning, you will visit the Robberg Marine and Nature Reserve. A rewarding hike ,taking approximately 4 hours, will lead you around the peninsula along high cliffs and through a wide variety of indigenous fynbos vegetation. The view over the “Bahia Famosa” bay named by the early Portuguese seafarers will be unforgettable. On top, you may spot numbers of seals, dolphins and in season even whales! The afternoon in Knysna can be used for your own leisure. We offer a range of additional trips and excursions. There is also time for more adventurous activities, such as an optional skydive from 10 000 feet high. Enjoy a 20 minute plane flight over the Knysna forests and Plettenberg Bay coastline, exit the plane with your Tandem Master and experience the rush of a 35 second free fall at 200 KPH! Day 9: On Safari in a private Game Reserve

This morning you will be heading in a Westerly direction towards Mossel Bay along the Garden Route. Once you’ve arrived at your guest house, you can enjoy the Indian Ocean sea breeze. Today you are booked for a safari drive through a stunning private game reserve, nearby Mossel Bay. Situated between the magnificent Outeniqua Mountains and unspoiled beaches of the Indian Ocean, in the heart of the Garden Route, this 4200 hectare Game Reserve ensures its visitors a unique South African Safari experience. The park is malaria free and home to four of the “Big 5” (lion, elephant, buffalo and rhino), as well as antelope, including rare black impala, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, hippo and more. On a game drive in the park’s own vehicle you will experience close encounters with the reserves animals.

Day 10: On the Beach

Today can be spent alongside the warm Indian Ocean. You can either go for a swim, explore the magnificent beaches or even take the motorbikes for a cruise along the coast. In this cosy town you will also have the chance to visit the Bartholomew Diaz museum to learn a bit more about the life of the early Portuguese Seafarers. Other attractions include the Diaz museum and the Post office tree. Alternatively you can explore more of the Outeniqua Mountains and its fantastic mountain passes.

Day 11: Beautiful Mountain Passes and the Route 62

This morning you will leave Mossel Bay to travel further West along the N2. After a few kilometres you follow a Northerly direction over the scenic Garcia's Pass. Garcia's Pass is not well known, despite its beauty and its claim as an incredible example of pass builders' craft. The pass has been widened in places and the rather sharp curves have been softened. Supporting walls have also been built, some being as high as 15 metres, constructed by the convicts under Thomas Bain. It climbs the slopes of the Mosambiekkop, also known as Sleeping Beauty. It takes you along a beautifully scenic tar road via Grootvaders Bosch and the Garcia Nature Reserve.All together the Pass is roughly 80 kilometres long and is magnificent, with wonderful views over the valley. Explore the pass at your leisure. At the end you will link up with the famous Route 62 and go past the Klein Karoo artist town of Barrydale, a good place for lunch. Once on your way again you will have a beautiful drive through rugged terrain as you take the 14 kilometre long Tradouw Pass between Barrydale and Swellendam. This breathtaking Pass, completed in 1873 also by Thomas Bain, was built with the help of a large gang of prisoners. The Tradouw Pass perches 315 metres up in the mountains so that most of the trip winds within a series of undulations of the Cape Folded Mountains. After you have reached South Africa’s third oldest town of Swellendam, you will check into your comfortable guest house in the heart of Swellendam.

Day 12: Along Cape Wine farms to Montagu

Today’s tour will take you past majestic mountains on the one side and the ever-flowing Breede River on the other. With beautiful fruit and wine farms lining the way, the awe-inspiring surroundings brings you past Bonnievale, which is situated on the banks of the Breede River. Surrounded by the Langeberg Mountain Range in the Northeast, and the Riviersonderend mountains in the Southwest, it is one of the most beautiful valleys in the Western Cape. After driving over the stunning Kogmanskloof Pass you will reach your destination for the day by lunchtime, the quaint little town of Montagu. Here you will be staying in a lovely country guest house for the night. A stroll through the village will introduce you to its fascinating architecture and historic buildings. You can enjoy some of the best preserved homes from the ox-wagon days just along Long Street where you will find more national monuments in one street than any other town in the country. In the afternoon you can enjoy one of over 45 different wine cellars that offer some of the finest wines money can buy. There are also many scenic walks, nature trails and mountain hikes in and around Montagu. The healing waters of the magical hot springs, that have kept Montagu famous for well over 150 years, are well worth a visit too. In the evening, you will have dinner at a good restaurant in town. 55Km / B,D

 

Day 13: The Cape Winelands

After breakfast you will be heading further Southwest, past vineyards and over yet another spectacular mountain pass, the Franschhoek Pass. The pass was completed in 1825, it links the two towns of Villiersdorp and Franschhoek and goes through stunningly beautiful nature reserves. It offers breathtaking views of the mountains, gorges and valleys. The view of Franschhoek from the top of the pass is simply astounding. Today you have time to stroll around Franschhoek, the famous gourmet capital of the Western Cape, where you can also enjoy something to eat at one of their restaurants or cafés. Franschhoek was founded by French Huguenot immigrants and cradled between mountain ranges that display a spectacular view over the luscious vineyard region. A few kilometers further you will reach Paarl. You will stay on a beautiful wine farm at the foot of Paarl Rock for the night. 142 km / B, D

 

Day 14: From Stellenbosch back to the “Mother City”

In the morning you embark on a short tour through the leafy university town of Stellenbosch, where you can visit the Village Museum among other things. Today you will be closing the circle by returning back to the “Mother City” of Cape Town, a mere 60 kilometers further away from Stellenbosch. After having returned the motorbikes back to the bike shop you will be driven back by taxi to you guest house in Cape Town. If you like, you can end the day by booking a short, but spectacular helicopter flight around Cape Town (weather permitting! Optional, not included in trip price).

Day 15:  Farewell on Table Mountain

Another unforgettable highlight awaits you this morning: an optional trip up Table Mountain with the cable car (3 650 ft). Its spectacular views on Cape Town are unforgettable (weather permitting, optional, to be paid on site). The rest of the day is reserved for relaxation in one of the most beautiful cities on this planet. You can go shopping at the Waterfront for those last minute souvenirs or take a stroll through the harbour while you think back on the wonderful tour you have just had. A fantastic final dinner awaits in a good restaurant in town. Todays transfers are not included in the tour price, however we are more than happy to help organise it for you! B, D

 

Day 16: Transfer to Cape Town International Airport

A transfer brings you to Cape Town International Airport where you will embark on your domestic flight to Johannesburg International airport. From here you will say farewell to South Africa. You are of course welcome to prolong your stay in Cape Town – we will gladly assist you with touristic tips as well as the booking of additional accommodation.
